Furthering the Legacy of Rachel Carson

As a member of the Rachel Carson Society, you’ve made an extraordinary pledge to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. Thank you for making Sierra Club part of your legacy and for ensuring our vibrant natural world lives on.

Rachel Carson, a marine biologist and noted author, ignited the modern climate movement with the release of her best-selling book, Silent Spring. Published in 1962 with a direct message — In nature, nothing exists alone — she illuminated the interconnectedness of all life on Earth.

By detailing the harmful effects of widespread chemical pesticide use and mapping these toxins throughout our food chain, she argued that humanity is not separate from and destined to control the natural world, but is, instead, an active participant. Her research inspired the establishment of the EPA and many new laws to protect our land, water, air, and ultimately, our own health and safety.

When Carson died of cancer in 1964, she left a substantial gift to Sierra Club — including future royalties from Silent Spring — to support our mission.

Today, Carson’s legacy is stronger than ever. With her research boldly fighting special interest groups, she provided a roadmap for navigating our current crisis: highlighting the inseparability of environmental and social justice issues. Only by acknowledging the connections between injustices to the Earth and marginalized communities can we win the fight for a just, equitable, and sustainable future for all.
